There is a moment when both people know that the bond has snapped, but they try to ignore that feeling in the back  of the mind.  On this one, I really got out on a limb by taking the bridge down a half step (i.e. - from C to B7, which leads me to E7, A7, D7).  Now, I'm stuck out here, and how do I get back to my tonic key?  Suddenly, it dawns on me: my first chord of the verse is the two minor.  In the key of C, that's a Dm, and I'm stuck on the bridge on a D major.  So, I just flatted the third, and we're back home!
